She appeared on Mnet’s ‘Unpretty Rap Star 3’ in 2016, showing off her talents in various fields. KASSY showed her singing and rap skills. KASSY, who was expanding her musical capabilities, took a step closer to the public. Her song, ‘Love Me Like You Used To,’ became popular among music fans. Since she is proving her potential as a vocalist, she has been steadily releasing songs full of sincerity. Q. How have you been these days?
▲ I am preparing to record a new song. I am preparing to act as I decided to appear in the music video. Until now, when I am filming a music video with a sad melody, I am thinking that I am waiting for someone that I do not know when will return. There’s an actor to act with me this time. I think I will be acting full of excitement. So, I’m looking forward to it.
Q. Recently, on the YouTube channel ‘Secret: Atelier’, you announced that your song, ‘Waiting for Spring,’ contains desperate love or unrequited love.
▲ I have a lot of sympathy for unrequited love. Along with the good memories of love, there are many painful, difficult, and sad times. I seem to like and express the sadness of love alone. In fact, when I go through something similar, I am trying to keep that feeling. It looks like I am used to the feeling somehow, but when I feel sad, I try to leave it behind. I leave the words or feelings I wanted to say at that time in my mind and remember them again when I make a song.
Q. Then, don’t you feel that your emotions are saturated?
▲ I will organize all the emotions I kept as I work on the song. For example, writing a song containing the sadness of a breakup brings out the feelings I buried at that time. After pouring all that emotion into a song, it feels like I am organizing my mind again. I always pour my emotions out when I am making a song.
Q. I hear a lot of reviews saying that ‘Your voice stimulates emotions.’
▲ Thank you very much. I think you know because I want to put my sincerity in my songs. If I suppressed or hid my feelings to write pretty words or expressions, it would have been difficult to create a genuine and sympathetic song. When I write a song, I think my feelings come first. I think you sympathized with my song more thanks to friendly expressions and feelings.
Q. Your OST (Original Sound Track) was also greatly loved. Why is KASSY’s OST so popular?
▲ I really like dramas and movies. When you see a scene in a drama or a scene where important emotions are dealt with, the music that fits the scene makes you more immersed. For some reason, the scene also looks alive. So, when I sing my song, and it perfectly fits the scene, I feel like I was the main character.
Q. Among your numerous OSTs, what song did you want to be ‘used in the right place’?
▲ This is ‘Good Morning,’ the OST of the KBS2 drama, ‘Fight For My Way.’ The melody is bright, but the scene is very sad. Viewers loved the song enough to appear as the theme song of Jooman and Seolhee in the drama. In addition to the appearance of the two characters, the scene contains their sad breakup. ‘Good Morning’ was an excellent song because it seemed to contain the narratives of Jooman and Seolhee well, with the sad lyrics contrasting with the bright melody.
Q. Are some of KASSY‘s songs meaningful?
▲ My song ‘Love Me Like You Used To’ finally ranked on the music chart after releasing it last year. I still remember that time. I saw it ranking on real-time music charts now. As I watched from the bottom, I thought that this was the best ranking every time. The song kept ranking. In fact, it’s a song full of thankfulness. I learned that even the song can’t be loved right now; if it’s really a good song, listeners will surely love it one day.
Q. After your songs ranked on the music chart, you made a lot of announcements about yourself. Did you feel any changes?
▲ It doesn’t change very much. But, it’s like I am playing music inside the house with the window a little open before. But now, it feels like I opened the window wider and started playing music after ‘Love Me Like You Used To.’ People passing by can see me a lot, and I think I can also look out of the big window and sing. I am grateful for just being able to sing.
However, when I saw the staff and family members I worked with, I also thought I’m not the only one who enjoys playing music. So, I thought, is it okay to do this? Sometimes I feel sorry. I realized my dream by making music, but I often thought that the people I am working together would like to see more visible results. If our environment gets better, there will be good synergy together. I am grateful for the public to recognize me little by little now. Sincerely, I think it will work someday.
Q. You didn’t have enough time to promote your name, but do you think you got over it well?
▲ I wasn’t impatient because I thought there were only a few people who will recognize me. However, it was the most regrettable thing that there were few stages where I could hear my songs. So I started going to Busking. Few people go busking after becoming a singer. But, at that time, I couldn’t do anything other than that. I started busking with the thought of making my own stage. If even one passerby became a fan, I thought I would be happy enough with it. I went around the country, bringing just one amplifier. I was so happy then.
Q. Was there an unforgettable busking performance?
▲ I’m trying to busk in a big park. But, it suddenly rains. Fortunately, in the car, I was wondering about what to do. There was a tent that a group had set up in advance to prepare for the event. So, I performed there while avoiding the rain. The sound of the rain hitting the tent was so good, and even in the rain, my heart was so warm. It is thanks to the people who remained to listen to my songs. It’s still an unforgettable moment.
Q. You participated in many songs as a guide. I think there must have been a song you were really hoping to make.
▲ I wanted to make all the songs that I sang. I liked all the songs that much. In fact, it is an opportunity to be grateful to be able to record a song. I was a guide, but I thought that if I sang hard, people would like to hear my voice and give me a chance. It was fascinating that some people said that if KASSY took part in making a song, it goes well.
Q. You worked a lot with producer Youngsoo Jo, so they called you a ‘Gold Spoon Singer.’ What do you think you’d learn a lot in the process of working on your albums?
▲ I always learn. It feels like I’m going to study rather than recording songs. When I work on the lyrics, I exchange conversations with composer Youngsoo Jo. I’m always grateful to him for allowing me to fix and learn independently without him giving instructions for correction.
Q. Please introduce your new song.
▲ I think I can show you a new look different from my previous songs. It’s an adorable song. This song conveys the excitement of falling in love for the first time. But, like the previous songs, I wish it would be a background song for a fluttering date rather than a song that people listen to when they are sad.
Q It’s been 6 years since your debut. What kind of artist do you want to be in 10 years?
▲ I hope that I will always be a natural singer to the public. I don’t want to be the kind of singer who people will say, “who is this person?” I always want to remain in the minds of the people. For me, I want to become a musician who people knew while listening to my songs.
Q. What can you say to your fans while they are waiting for your new song activities?
▲ The new song coming out this time is a really lovely song. So, please tell it to someone you love. If you listen to it together, it will be even more exciting. I hope you don’t have to be alone.
