The ‘Sound Source Power’ iKON is back and is gaining a lot of attention.
iKON’s digital single ‘Why Why Why’, which was released on the 3rd March is the beginning of their 2021. The song contains a love story that ends like a flower that bloomed beautifully and then faded away. In addition to the lyrical melody, iKON’s more mature vocals and emotional expressions stand out.
Although it is a song showing a sad farewell, iKON was more excited than ever. iKON said, “During the break, we had a thirst for album activities and performance on stage. There is certainly a desire to make our name more widespread and stronger this year. Please await our appearance as we will have highlights at every stage performance.”
The following is a question and answer with iKON.
Q. You have returned after a year. How do you feel about being active again after such a long time?
Kim Jin-Hwan: “First, I feel sorry for my fans. I often visited you through various communication channels such as YouTube, but it feels like it’s been a while. I wanted to return with good music. Also, I really want to make 2021, a year that certainly makes the name of iKON more widespread and stronger.”
Bobby: “It’s been a long time since I have performed, so preparing is a fun process. But, there’s one thing I cannot do for now, and that is to get closer to my fans. However, I will try harder and work harder this time, so please look forward to that.”
Song Yun-Hyung:” I always feel sorry for my fans, but at the same time, grateful for their unending support. They are always waiting even though I haven’t been here for a long time. This time, unlike our usual image, we will try to look a little more mature. We will try to make it a year filled with iKON’s.”
Koo Joon-Hoe: “My heart is so happy. During the break, I had a thirst for album activities and the urge to perform on stage. I endured it with the support and love of my fans. I want to be active while meeting my fans with a grateful heart. I want to work with joy.”
Kim Dong-Hyuk: “Before our comeback, I was curious about the reaction of the fans, so I kept observing. I saw that there are so many people looking forward to our comeback. Because of that, I prepared hard to meet their expectations. I am trembling but it feels like a flutter of excitement.”
Jung Chan-Woo: “I feel good because I can feel that our fans like our teaser video. I want to show you a more cool and mature look. I hope we enjoy it together.”
Q. What kind of song is ‘Why Why Why’?
Kim Dong-Hyuk: “It contains the message of a lover’s separation. It’s really a sad song in which we can’t grasp the reason for the breakup, so we keep asking ourselves and try to accept what happened. Honestly, all the members put a lot of effort just to convey the emotion contained in the lyrics.”
Q. How did you feel when you first heard ‘Why Why Why’?
Song Yun-Hyung: “Title song!! (Laughter) The composition is not obvious. Usually, it ends with the outro coming out after the peak, but ‘Why Why Why’ is finished with the emotion at its peak. That part seems to act as a charm that makes you want to hear it once more. In particular, there is a section where Dong-Hyuk cries, and we cannot forget his face when recording. I think it’s the killing point of this song.”
Kim Dong-Hyuk: “When recording, the producers valued my emotion very much. So we recorded it and I felt teary-eyed. My tears gathered slightly after recording. I worked hard recording over the three days.”
Kim Jin-hwan: “That’s right. I put a lot of effort into it. I put my feelings in each letter of the lyrics. I also really like the title. Isn’t repetition engraved in our minds? By emphasizing the word ‘why’ three times, it seems to have well expressed the feeling of being unable to accept the breakup, easily.”
Bobby: “I thought it was a sad song because there was a lot of emotions from the members while singing the song. When I practised dancing, I almost cried while listening to Dong -Hyuk’s last part.”
Q. Bobby also directly participated in writing and composing lyrics. Any work secrets?
Bobby: “While I’m in charge of rap lyrics, I talked a lot about the concept of the song with the producers. From the mood of the song to the melody, we carefully discussed what kind of flow to put in. I tried a lot and I kept changing. Then we have decided to make it like ‘let’s go calm and quiet’, and after a long revision, this concept was introduced.”
Q. Please choose your favorite part of the choreography.
Koo Jun-Hoe: “There is choreography that expresses the appearance of the white ash falling when the lyrics of ‘Only the ash remained in white’ flows out. Personally, I was very impressed.”
Song Yun-Hyung: “The choreography I think is the best is when Jun-Hoe lies down in the chorus of verse 1. It’s a choreography that we’ve never done. Lie down while singing the part ‘Why does laughter make you cry?’ The lyrics and the choreography go very well together and can really raise emotions.”
Kim Jin-Hwa: “You can definitely discover iKON’s new attempts. For example, Bobby doesn’t appear in verse 1, and Bobby’s part appears in verse 2. The composition also seems to be different and fun.”
Jung Chan-Woo: “We had a lot of meetings when preparing for this album. We did it only with the members, and we often held meetings with the people of the company to discuss and suggest our ideas. Performance is also one of the things we put our heart into. The performance created by the choreographers was not used as it was, and many modifications were made within it. I prepared hard for this.”
Q. Do you have any new features that you want to show?
Kim Dong-Hyuk: “I have become more mature. In particular, the charm of each member is also felt in the jacket photo, which is a part that I want to emphasize regarding this comeback. As Chan-Woo said, among the activities we have done so far, our opinions have been reflected the most. We actively participated in what kind of figure we want to show, what style we want to show, and how we want to challenge ourselves.”
Song Yun-Hyung: “I paid a lot of attention to the visuals. First of all, I changed my hair color. I have white hair now, but I’m going to change more in the future. As the fans have been waiting for a long time, I have been thinking of various styling that I haven’t tried before. We will always give a new stage presence by giving variations to our style.”
Q. Memorable behind-the-scenes while shooting the music video?
Song Yun-Hyung: “When shooting outdoors for a group dance scene, it was really windy. The wind became stronger because we were shooting on the roof of a tall building. I am very proud to be able to finish the filming safely in spite of the tremendous wind.”
Goo Jun-Hoe: “I sympathized. It’s definitely a motion in a stationary state, but the wind kept pushing me. Now it remains a very interesting memory (laughs).”
Bobby: “I don’t appear in verse 1. So I watched the members’ dance, one step away. I felt ‘iKON is so cool’ (laughs)”
Kim Jin-Hwan: “I took a personal cut at the end. At that time, Chan-Woo was tired, but he waited for me. The thought that Chan-woo was waiting for me, so I took the picture with more energy. Thanks to that, I finished filming in only 3 takes. I really want to say thank you to Chan-Woo.”
Q. What are the strengths of iKON?
Jung Chan-Woo: “Six different colours are combined to create a good synergy. It’s a perfect match. The greatest synergy seems to come out when united as a team called iKON.”
Koo Joon-Hoe: “We have been together for a long time, since childhood. It’s like we are a family more than a team. I want to see all my co-members longer.”
Q. ‘Why Why Why’ activities and ‘Kingdom’ preparations overlap, and you have a very busy schedule, isn’t it difficult?
Koo Jun-Hoe: “I have more excitement so it doesn’t feel it hard. Perhaps, that is why I had a lot of time to laugh with the members in the practice room. Above all, I got my energy from the thought that I could show a new look to the fans. Also, after the filming of ‘Kingdom’, I received a lot of encouragement. Being nervous is an experience after a long time, but it was so good in itself. While resting, I missed this feeling and felt great excitement.”
Bobby: “Recently, I felt something while doing solo activities. The process of preparation is busy, but when I start the activity I get really energized. Energy springs up when I think of our fans. It’s not difficult because we just need to show you what we have prepared so far. So I am sure that ‘Kingdom’ will be fun too. Isn’t iKON the best team?”
Q. A word to the fans.
Kim Dong-Hyuk: “This comeback is another beginning for iKON. I am already excited because I think that we can show a different image of ourselves, with various activities starting from this new song. I keep working on music. I wanted to see a lot by being in this position, and I really want to say that I love you.”
Kim Jin-Hwan: “iKON is always something I miss and want to see. We will do our best to show you that iKON can do good performances and activities. Love it!”
