RM, a member of the top idol group BTS (RM, Jin, Jimin, J-Hope, Suga, V, Jungkook), directly talked about the issues surrounding the manipulation of the Billboard chart results.
In an interview with US Billboard on August 26th, BTS said that fans of American pop star Olivia Rodrigo and Dua Lipa claimed that ARMY (BTS fandom) are manipulating the chart ranking for ‘Butter’ and ‘Permission to Dance’ to top the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
RM said, “It’s a fair question. But if there is a conversation inside US Billboard about what being No. 1 should represent, then it’s up to them to change the rules and make streaming weigh more on the ranking.”
Also, RM said, “Slamming us or our fans for getting to No. 1 with physical sales and downloads, I don’t know if that’s right. It just feels like we’re easy targets because we’re a boy band, a K-pop act, and we have this high fan loyalty.”
Meanwhile, Youngjae Shin, CEO of Big Hit Music, the management company of BTS, said, “I know that the development of the music market is something that makes some people scratch their heads” regarding the claim of the chart manipulation. I don’t think it occupies a place. In many ways, the influence of BTS’ songs has been shown, and I’m proud of that achievement.”
