Kpop group BTS topped the ‘Top Digital Song Sales’ chart in the United States in 2021 with the global mega-hit song ‘Butter.’
This is a splendid achievement achieved for the second year in a row following ‘Dynamite’ in 2020.
According to the 2021 Annual Report released by MRC Data on January 6 (US time), BTS’ digital single ‘Butter,’ released in May last year, was downloaded about 1.89 million times, making it a ‘Top Digital Song Sales.’
MRC Data released an annual report based on data analyzing figures and trends related to music, such as sales of physical albums (CDs, LPs, etc.), digital downloads, and audio streaming in the United States from January 1 to December 30, 2021.
According to the report, as digital music sales declined every year, only one song surpassed 1 million downloads in 2021, following 2019 and 2020. The number of downloads of ‘Dynamite,’ which topped the ‘Top Digital Song Sales’ chart in 2020, was 1.26 million, and ‘Butter’ was the only song that exceeded 1 million downloads in 2021.
In the ‘2021 Top Digital Song Sales’ ranking, not only ‘Butter’ but also ‘Permission to Dance’ and ‘Dynamite’ ranked 3rd and 6th respectively. In addition, ‘My Universe,’ a song that BTS collaborated with Coldplay, also took 7th place. As a result, BTS placed four songs in the top 10 of the ‘Top Digital Song Sales’ chart.
The 2021 MRC Annual Report greatly highlighted Kpop, which was touted in the United States last year, saying, “BTS has reached the top of the Billboard ‘Hot 100’ for two years in a row, with three songs topped the ‘Hot 100’ in 2021 alone. ‘Butter’ topped the ‘Hot 100’ for a total of 10 weeks, and ‘Permission to Dance’ in which Ed Sheeran participated in the song production and a collaboration song with Coldplay (‘My Universe’) also reached the top of the ‘Hot 100.”
Billboard, a US music media outlet, also emphasized in an article analyzing the 2021 MRC annual report, “BTS is the group with the most sold digital music in the US for the second year in a row.”
According to Billboard, Kpop group BTS sold a total of 1.03 million physical albums (CDs) last year and was selected as the ‘artist who sold the most albums in 2021.’
