Twitter releases data related to ‘Hashtag Day.’ In the ranking, BTS-related hashtag ranked second place.
The second most used hashtag in the world in the first half of the year was BTS’s ‘#BTS.’
To celebrate the Hashtag Day, Twitter released the ranking of the most used hashtags in the world from January to June this year on August 23rd.
According to Twitter, Kpop related keywords accounted for 5 of the 10 most used hashtags worldwide.
‘#BTS,’ used 150 million times, was in second place. Then, ‘#EXO’ and ‘#Enhypen’ were in 7th and 8th place, respectively.
#BTSArmy,’ which refers to the fandom of BTS, and the hit song ‘#Dynamite’ ranked 6th and 10th, respectively.
The most used hashtag in the first half of 2021 was ‘#iHeartAwards,’ an awards ceremony hosted by an American online radio broadcaster. Also, in 3rd place was ‘#WhatsHappeninginMyanmar,’ related to the military coup in Myanmar.
During the same period, a total of 7 million tags were used in Korea. South Korea’s hashtag usage is the sixth-largest in the world after Japan, the US, the United Kingdom, India, and Canada.
Hashtags started in 2007 when open-source advocate Chris Messina proposed grouping a lot of information on Twitter into topics using the ‘#’ symbol. Since then, it has played a major role in spreading social movements such as ‘Arab Spring,’ the ‘#MeToo movement,’ and ‘BlackLivesMatter.’
